What is 'Multi-lane' when mentioned for a Chassis, Backplane or SATA Controller?

Multi-lane ( also called InfinyBand ) is a standard for SATA cabling.
It provides 4 SATA channels in one cable.
This enables you to use fewer cables in a Chassis which is better for the airflow and easier to install.
To make use of this you need a Chassis with multi-lane SATA Backplanes, multilane SATA cables ( sometimes they come with the Controller ) and a multi-lane SATA Controller.
