Tech Help - How much RAM do I need for a web server?

Published by Richard Parry on 29th Apr 2019

First, we need to identify if you plan on doing virtualisation. Typically, a web server doesn’t need a huge amount of RAM if it’s only going to be a web server – That is, it runs either Linux or Windows and solely has a web server application installed.

If something else is needed, such as a SQL Server or perhaps some web server management software, such as Plesk or cPanel, then a higher specification is needed.

Second, you need to think about expansion – It’s very rare to install an OS bare-metal for a web server these days – This is due to the important of virtualisation and the benefit of uptime and availability that is synonymous with that technology.

Therefore, you need to think about the virtualisation platform you intend to run and how many virtual machines you want to start off with and how you want it to grow.

There’s a huge number of more authoritative resources online about virtualisation of course and these can go into a huge amount of depth on how to spec your own virtual infrastructure.

We have our own vmware certified technical team who would be happy to help choose the right hardware for your web server/hosting requirements.
